Orissa, one of the most picturesque states in East India is well known about its tribes, temples, beautiful landscapes and wild life. As a matter of fact Orissa is the third most tribal concentrated place and plays host to nearly 62 tribes. A very important place in Orissa which is truly a landmark is Puri. This place is India’s most important pilgrimage centers and is dominated by the ‘Jagannath Temple’. Puri Orissa

Puri being a coastal district of Orissa , is famous for its Historic antiquities ,Religious sanctuaries , Architectural Grandeur , Sea-scape beauty,moderate climate.It holds a wealth of attraction for the visitors. It boasts of a continuous history from the 3rd Century B.C. to the present day and its unique monuments like those of Lord Jagannath at Puri , the Sun God at Konark are the famous in the world. It has the Chilika lake , one of the largest brackish water lakes in India, that holds a picturesque Sea-Scape beauty. It offers an ideal resort for birds who migrate from different parts of the continent . By virtue of Geographical location , the climate of Puri is equable through out the year.
Jagannath Temple
The magnificent Jagannath temple is regarded as one of the Chardhams (four pilgrimage sites) of Hindu religion, which are situated on all the four corners of the country. This temple is regarded as the Dham of eastern India. Dedicated to the Lord of the Universe (Jag-universe/ Nath-lord), it was built during the 12th century. One of the tallest (65 m) temples of India, this temple dominates the skyline and the townscape of Puri. It is a living example of the Kalinga style of architecture.
Gundicha Mandir
The Gundicha Ghar or Gundicha temple is an important part of the famous Rath Yatra festival of Puri. It has some interesting legends related to it. According to one the Gundicha Ghar is the house of Lord Krishna’s loving aunt. On the day of the Rath Yatra, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken in gorgeously caparisoned wooden rath (chariots) from the main gate of the Jagannath temple to Gundicha temple. At the garden house, their aunt greets them by feeding them padoapitha (specially baked rice cakes). This place is regarded as equally holy as Lord stays here for nine days during the festival.
Atharnala Bridge
The magnificent Atharnala Bridge that was constructed during the 13th century is a living example of the engineering marvel of the ancient times. The size of the bridge is around 85x11 m, and even after so many centuries it is still in use. Situated at the entrance of the town, pilgrims offer prayers here as well.
Beaches in Puri
Puri’s white sand beaches are well known all over the country. They are perhaps the only walkable beaches on the eastern coastline that are carpeted with clean white sand. It is also worthwhile to request the local fishermen for a boat ride into the sea.
How to Reach Puri
Puri in Orissa is a major pilgrimage destination for the Hindus. Several number of temples coupled with the beautiful beach on the Bay of Bengal are the biggest tourist attractions in Puri.
By Air: Puri does not have an airport of its own. The nearest airport is located in Bhubaneswar the capital city of Orissa. Bhubaneswar is connected by air to cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad.
By Train: Puri has a Railway Station too. Many important stations link Puri to places like Kolkata, Rourkela.
By Road: An important district in Orissa, Puri is civered by extensive network of roads. Main cities and tourist destinations, like Bhubaneswar, Konark in Orissa are connected to Puri by road.
